Garden Duty

Just another thought on protecting your plants.  Global warming has encouraged us to get at the gardens early, but mother nature still rules.

On average, the last spring frost at the RBG is May 3.  But the current forecast shows night-time temperatures in Hamilton below zero until May 11.  As you go down the peninsula it might be a day or two earlier I suspect, but be careful.  Next week might be a better goal for planting.

Today's culinary hint: heating a boiled egg in the microwave may result in a loud noise and a bit of a mess to clean up.

Headed to the greenhouse to start work on the biggest garden out front.  The first thing that caught my attention was that the notorious Garlic Mustard had invaded.

The little white flowers are pretty and the plant smells nice, but the roots give off chemicals that will kill other plants nearby.  So they have to go!  And you can't pull them up - the roots go a few inches deep so they have to be dug up, a challenge when they're under bushes!

That looks better.

The Juniper you see in the picture started its life as an eight inch accessory plant in a planter.  Didn't sell, and at the end of the season after the other plants had died I put it here.  It now has a twelve foot spread!

And my scrawny Cactus plant is now, three years later, thriving amidst the Irish Moss.

As I wrapped up the day's work (only three hours and I felt good enough to carry on, but decided that discretion was the better part of valour) David brought another load of plants in.  

The greenhouse is well stocked.
