Events

Today's birthday girl is Liz Knapp.  Best wishes Liz, and I hope that Al is taking you out to dinner tonight, even if it's to Teddy's!

---------------------------------------

Yesterday I "golfed".  The description of that has changed for me in the last year.  My average score is up 10 strokes.  Essentially, golf now it simply a chance to have a beer and spend time with special friends.  And if you are desperate for friendship, you can "golf" twice a week 😂.

I suppose that age could be to blame, as defined below (thanks John).

I very quietly confided to my friends that I was having an affair.
They asked me, "Are you having it catered?"
. . . and that, my friends, is the definition of 'OLD'!!!

----------------------------------------

Today was a weed and cut grass day.  The exciting moment of the day was seeing this rabbit (did I mention that I was desperate?).

Rabbits are considered a pest at the greenhouse.  They chew threw water lines and plants die.  But they move too fast for me to catch them with the mower 😎.

---------------------------------------------

I watched the U.S. Presidential debate for a while last night.  Couldn't bring myself to watch the whole thing.  Biden fulfilled the Republicans dream by proving that he is too old and feeble to lead the nation for another four years.

Don't know which country is in the most trouble because of its leader - Canada with it's current leader, or the U.S. with either of their choices.  Our trip to Florida in January could be very "interesting".

----------------------------------------------

But the really big news is that my great granddaughter Rowan has graduated!  From toddler status at daycare!

Thanks for sharing the photo Yancy.

I feel better about the world situation now!

Stay well.

Memories

I have been reminded (a kind word that is used when octogenarians forget important events) that David and I won the Quoits tournament in 2021.  That means I have been lucky with four different partners!  That shirt may run out of room for adding more years!

---------------------------------------------

Looks like one of the residents in our building has given up hope on the Tiger-Cats!

------------------------------------------------

Tonight we joined Kathryn and Anna for dinner at Chuck's Roadhouse in honour of Kathryn's birthday.  And a card game back at our place afterwards.

Anna's company is registered in Germany where her business partner lives.  They work German hours and Anna's day starts at about 11 p.m.   So, when she joins us for special events like this she is basically getting up in the middle of her "night", and she did that twice in the past week.  Well done!

------------------------------------------

Tomorrow it's golf, and in the evening, the first meeting of our prospective Junior Optimist Club.

Stay well.

Quoits

A quiet day yesterday.  The best weather day of the year so far led to an enjoyable golf round.

Had enough energy afterward to cut a grass field at the greenhouse.

----------------------------

Best birthday wishes today for sister Judy and second cousin Rosie Boileau.

And, today was our annual golfers' Quoits match at the Parker Pitch.  I got lucky and was matched up with Calvin - and we took top honours!

That shirt of mine has two champion years stitched on the sleeve.   I won with Ron Leach a few years ago, and with Matt in the interim.  Have to send the shirt out so that an additional year can be included.

Sandro and Al are past champions.

Thanks for hosting Gary.

-----------------------------------------

Till tomorrow.  Stay well.

The usual morning of weeding and grass cutting.

Tonight we headed to Theatre Aquarius for "An American Hymnal".

A thought provoking show with beautiful voices.  Just a three day run which ends tomorrow.

That's all folks.  Till tomorrow.

Stay well.

Plants and People

Not as much heat today, but the humidity was over the top.  Nevertheless, I finished my 8 to 10 shift, cleaning up another garden in the process.

Then I spent some "me" time and moved the Oak planters down front where they can be watered when I'm watering the garden plants.  And, today I found two more hiding under a bush!

Which brings us up to 13 😟.  Don't know how the hell this is going to end, but the hunt must continue.
--------------------------------
While I was watering down front, I took a picture of the Prickly Pear Cactus, which has started blooming.

By the end of the weekend there will be many more blooms!

In the meantime, this planting, which is just ten feet away and in the same full sun growing conditions, only has a few buds and they have yet to start opening.

Mother Nature does some interesting things!
---------------------------------------
Speaking of interesting things, one of the items on the news is that people who are trying to escape dictatorship in their home countries are coming to Canada and then sneaking across the border into the U.S.
Good luck with that!  If Trump wins, they will have gone from the frying pan to the fire and they'll wish they were back in Canada, instead of being sent back to where they came from!
---------------------------------------
Stay well.

Auctions and Action

Last night, Mardi and I attended a Wentworth Masonic Lodge fundraising night at Stoney Creek United Church (the Masons rent the old chapel for their regular meetings) in support of the family of a seven year old who is  fighting leukemia.  The "dinner" was hot dogs and hamburgers with salads, and ice cream and strawberries for dessert, but the cause made it taste good.
We bid on several silent auction items and won four of them as you can see in the picture.

I think that pinwheel bowl that I won for Mardi is just the right size for my drink.  Unfortunately, Mardi doesn't like the Crown Royal that I won 😘🥰😍🤩.  But I do like to golf at Thundering Waters - glad that she won that one.  She also won a gift card to a selection of restaurants.
-----------------------------------
This morning, I started work at 7:45 and lasted until coffee break.  But I did get that garden, which had been invaded by field grass, finished, and cut some grass before the belt that spins the blades broke.  I also found two more Oak saplings which I dug up and put in planters (don't tell David - he has humoured me so far, but there may be a limit).  But I was serenaded by a Mocking Bird the whole time.  Nice!

There's a Rose of Sharon between the two Junipers.  It was a "Charlie Brown" specimen when I planted it, but it's doing well now.  Some day it will put on a nice show.
-------------------------------------------
Headed over to Chuck's Roadhouse to meet Maureen and Matt and enjoy the Rib Special.  It was a bit hot - their air conditioner was not working - but the food and company were enjoyable.
-------------------------------------------
And tonight we attended our condo corp. annual meeting.  Apparently, they have saved us megabucks on a couple of projects, and they promised that the gardens would be complete by this weekend, so the meeting became a bit of a love-in.  We'll see.

Stay well.

I spent this morning with Mardi and sister Judy, attending yard sales. And I found a treasure!
Assuming that all the parts are there, and that I can follow the instruction pamphlet, it will turn into this.
Some rainy day when there is nothing else on the agenda I'll put it together. And, I will turn the $10 that I spent into either a fabulous new feature at Trillium Hill, or an incredibly expensive item for sale in the garden centre . ------------------------------- Then I headed to Trillium Hill to do some more gardening. I finished the last garden in the first section along the driveway, and then completed these two along the hill.
Three wagon loads of sod and weeds taken away, four broken bags of soil added in their place, and four bags of red mulch added. ----------------------- Tomorrow, I'll continue to work on the gardens. Monday will be a golf day. Tuesday, Mother Nature has told me to stick to cutting grass - it will be too hot for digging. Stay well.

Gardens and Gigs.

While I was having my challenging day on the golf course yesterday, Mardi was enjoying a sail past of four swans, three of whom she got in this picture.
On the second day after buying this place I was on the balcony and saw two swans swim by. And I knew then that we had picked the right place. Beautiful birds! Wonderful omen! ----------------------- Made good progress on the gardens today. The front was finished last week.
I can't take credit for the big planter. That is a management project. Today I almost finished the first phase of the driveway gardens, completing all but one small garden. That will be done tomorrow.
The next phase will be the gardens across the top of the hill. And then I'll continue to work my way up the driveway. ------------------------------------------------------ This evening we headed to Port Colborne to see Norm Foster's show "Doris and Ivy in the Home". It is one of his best! Continuing laughter. Nut first, we had dinner at the Smokin Buddha. The garage door was up so we had an open air seat.
And that was good because they had some entertainment.
All in all, a nice night out with my gal! Stay well.

Thursday, June 13, 2024

Today I realized that golf is not a sport. It's a penance - voluntary self-punishment inflicted as an outward expression of repentance for having done wrong. And the way I have been playing, I apparently have done a lot of wrong lately. If it wasn't for the enjoyment of spending tiome with good friends (and Al) I'd give the game up for good! ----------------------- Hopefully, I will have a more positive outlook tomorrow. Stay well.

Wednesday, June 12, 2024

The first item of business is to wish Maureen and Matt the very best as they celebrate 20 years of happiness!
We spend quite a bit of time with our special friends (especially when rib specials are on the menu!). ------------------------ Today I finished the garden I had been working on. In the process, I discovered another Oak tree hiding under a pine tree. It almost ended up in the compost pile - darned squirrel planted it in the wrong place.
Also worked on a few other gardens, one of which required sod to be removed. While I was dumping the sod in the compost area I saw this Wild Rose bush.
Mother Nature has planted many of these on the back half of David's property. Very pretty. ---------------------- Tonight, Mardi and I attended the 70th anniversary of the Optimist Club of Stoney Creek. A special moment of the evening ocurred when the club voted to sponsor a Junior Optimist Club. A new day is dawning.

Tuesday, June 11, 2024

Today I cut the grass and finished cleaning out the field grass and weeds from the garden that I was working on.  I'll add some top soil and mulch and finish it tomorrow.

But, I missed the best part of the day.  Apparently, this deer......

...spent some time in the field beside the greenhouse, then crossed over in front, and continued up the other side to the escarpment.  One of those special moments, enjoyed by Sean, Donna and Brooks.  Thanks for the picture Sean.

I don't know about you folks, but I'm really concerned about the near future of the U.S.  The following article captures my fears exactly.

That's how it will be if they get elected.  And, if they don't, there will be civil war, and the Republicans have the guns!

Cult of Trump poised to topple American democracy

Where are the voices that warn the world of what happens when hatred is used as a primary organizing tool to gain power?

Trump a master of mob psychology

No dictators have ever come to power all by themselves. They always have a lot of help from true believers. So it is with Donald Trump. Republicans at every level are systematically dismantling democracy, Paul Kahnert writes.

Now that the 80th anniversary of D-Day is over, let’s remember the refrain that every country said at the end of the Second World War: “Never again.”

But with the far right rising all over the world, it looks like “never again” is in danger.

Antisemitism and the use of hate as an organizing tool is fast rising everywhere, including here in Canada. Where are the voices that warn the world of what happens when hatred is used as a primary organizing tool to gain power?

No dictators have ever come to power all by themselves. They always have a lot of help from true believers. So it is with Donald Trump. Republicans at every level are systematically dismantling democracy. They are making it much harder to vote, changing district boundaries and doing everything they can to change the rules to help Trump. Historically, dictators have employed the use of thugs and threats of violence to come to power. Clearly, Trump is too.

Why does half the U.S. believe so fervently in Trump? Americans have been conned by a master of mob psychology. Like 1930s Germany, the U.S. is largely a nation of working poor. Compounding this situation is that due to a very poor education system, Americans suffer from ignorance. They are also victims of one of human nature’s strongest drives, which is to belong. Human nature’s wish for a saviour when suffering is also overwhelming.

Taken all together, this has made the U.S. vulnerable to a demagogue like Trump who ticks all the boxes of a personality cult:

  • The group is focused on a living leader, usually a self-proclaimed chosen one;
  • Members display excessively zealous, unquestioning loyalty;
  • The leader and group are preoccupied with bringing in new members;
  • Questioning, doubt and dissent are discouraged and punished;
  • The leader continuously fleeces his flock for money.

Trump is very obviously following Hitler’s playbook. Hitler repeatedly said “I will make Germany great again.” Trump has repeatedly said and continues to say “I will make America great again.”

Hitler called the media “der liegen press,” the lying press. Trump calls the media “fake news.”

Both pander to the Christian far-right. The evidence that Hitler was a staunch Christian is overwhelming. The Christian far right has demonstrated complete control of the Republican party. Christian nationalists are calling for no separation between church and state.

With their continuous attacks on women, gay and trans rights, an emblem of the far-right, you may as well call them “The American Taliban.”

The Nazi technique of repetition, of repeating big lies over and over again until they are deeply believed, is exactly what Trump and the Republicans are using very effectively. Repeated lying is a main feature of dictatorships.

Sociopaths cannot live without spinning a web of lies and are extremely convincing. Hitler, like Trump, had a messiah complex believing he was the chosen one and only he could save Germany. On Aug. 21, 2019, Trump went on the public record stating he was the “chosen one.” Previously on July 22, 2016, at the Republican National Convention he stated “I alone can fix America.”

Last August Trump called for the suspension of the Constitution and Republicans remained silent. On Remembrance Day last year, speaking to a packed crowd inside a school auditorium in New Hampshire, using Nazi language, Trump said: “We will put America first and today, especially in honour of our great veterans on Veterans Day, we pledge to you that we will root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country.”

When Trump is elected, like Hitler did, he will very likely declare an emergency, suspend the Constitution and with the help of loyal Republicans try to arrest his enemies, undesirables and protesters.

These are grave danger signs for “never again” and demands this quote.

“First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a communist;

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a trade unionist;

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew;

Then when they came for me — and there was no one left to speak out.” — Pastor Martin Niemoller (1892—1984).

Hopefully, I'll have a more positive message tomorrow.

Stay well.

Bogies and Berries

In my quest to discover the limits of being an 87 year old, I have found that the distance your clubs can hit a ball is only two thirds what it was a few years ago.  And even that's not guaranteed!

And today I discovered that when the temperature starts at 11C, and only gets up to 12C, your hands go numb and your body starts to pout and hits the ball sideways or in other unwanted directions in protest.

You don't want to know the score - suffice it to say that it took a coffee and Bailey's to recover.  And a nap when I got home!

Of course, I could always blame it on my choice of socks today....

...which would make it Barbara's fault, since she gave them to me.  Makes sense, right?

--------------------------------------

Meanwhile, Mardi was picking strawberries.

Four of those baskets were brought home.  A lot smarter than playing golf!

-----------------------------------------

Have fun and stay well.

Life's Adventures

Today's project was to clean up another garden.  Made good progress, but I did get sidetracked.  Discovered four Oak saplings poking out from under the trees, so I had to dig them up and pot them.  We're now up to six.

It took two broken bags of soil to fill the pots.  And I have to thank the squirrel who brought the acorns across the road last year and planted them for us.

I did manage to take away two wagon loads of sod from the perimeter of the garden.

And after removing the field grass and weeds from the front half of the garden I added three bags of mulch.

Now, I did have to lift and carry those bags of soil and mulch (don't tell anyone) and do some heavy digging.  You see, my problem is that I don't have a road map for what the limits should be for an 87 year old.  I know that I time out after 3 or 4 hours, whether that's gardening or golf.  And, so far at least, I do stop doing anything that seems to be pushing me to my limits.  And, in future, I will ask for help.  But, beyond that, my life is an ongoing adventure.

I know that I won't be around to see those Oak trees get big.  But, that's OK too.  It's all about enjoying the world around us and having fun.  Like when I run the mower in the back field and feel like the Pied Piper, as the Swallows swoop back and forth around me to snack on the insects that I stir up.  Top of the world!

-----------------------------------------

Mardi and I share that outlook on life (love that lady!).  We may not be here for a long time, but we are definitely here for a good time.  And, thanks to Barbara and Jo-Ann, that includes steaks at Chuck's Roadhouse on Father's Day (a week early, but we couldn't wait).  Thank you "kids"!

----------------------------------------------
To finish off the day, I headed to Stoney Creek United Church, a.k.a. Bell Tower Place, to hear the Voices Of The Creek.

Three choirs combined to make some good sounds.

That's Mardi in the middle (behind the white keyboard).

Two brothers, who call themselves VersaCellos, put on an incredible show.

Soloists and a duet also contributed to a fine night of music.

Stay positive and stay well.
