Day Three - Sunday, July 5, 2015 - Disappointing.
A disappointing day, but we'll get into that in a moment. We left the heat of Las Vegas (108F on Friday, down to 107F yesterday) and headed to Grand Canyon West. As we gained altitude the vegetation changed. Eventually we reached the zone that is friendly toward the Joshua Tree.
As you can see, the sky looked fine (for Ontario) but in Arizona clouds like this keep building through the day and eventually bring thunderstorms with them (after all, it's the beginning of the desert monsoon season).
We arrived at Grand Canyon West and discovered that the Skywalk was closed due to the risk of lightning strikes.
Doesn't look too bad does it? We hoped it would clear up.
So, to fill in time we took a few pictures:

Eagle Point is behind and to our left of the girls. The wings of the eagle are the top of the ridge, the head is at the low point of the ridge, with the body below. A sacred place to the Hualapai. (you will notice that they rope off areas where they do'n't want you to go, but the edge of the canyon is wide open - every time I've been here (3) I fully expect to see someone fall in, especially the idiots who turn their back to the canyon and proceed to take a "selfie")
We watched a traditional dance
and checked out the various examples of native dwellings
then travelled to Guano Point to see the Colorado River below
but the weather kept getting worse
until the torrent began and the lightning strikes came as close as the other side of the canyon.
We had a meal under the tarped patio and checked out the gift shops, but finally had to accept the fact that our Skywalk wasn't going to happen. So, we headed for Flagstaff, on Route 66, and enjoyed the Burma Shave signs (no pics - weather wasn't cooperating).
The good news is that our room at the Little America Inn (my all-time favourite, due to the beautiful pine-scented mountain air) impressed the ladies.
Hopefully, tomorrow's weather will be a bit more benign.
