After leaving Los Angeles we headed up the Pacific Coast Highway. First stop was Morro Rock.
If it hadn't been for this welcome wave, I would have been very disappointed. Since my first visit to Morro Bay many years ago, the place has become very touristy and there is now a power plant right beside the rock. It used to be unspoiled.
The next portion of the drive was nice but unspectacular.
But then things got more interesting!
And strange!!!
Zebras in California??? We later found out that this was part of the huge Hearst Ranch, and these guys are descendants of the ones that William Randolph Hearst brought in to stock his private zoo. There are about 120 Zebras on the ranch.
The Castle blew us away. Unbelievably huge (56 bedrooms) and opulent.
The room below was constructed in the 1920's
This bathroom is in a section completed in the 1940's.
Much of the decor - ceilings, statuary, etc. came from Europe and is hundreds of years old.
There is an outdoor pool, closed now to save water.
But the indoor pool is more spectacular! That's a diving platform halfway up the alcove.
The grounds were every bit as impressive. This is a destination well worth a visit!
Apparently, Reggie has been standing around too long - she has sprouted - and she's now as tall as Sarah-Jean.
If you needed proof that there is a water shortage in California, having to use Port -A-Pottys at a castle should convince you!
Next stop - Elephant Seal Beach.
They're not dead, they're sleeping.
Most have yet to moult. But the guy below has. Shortly after this shot, he chased the female off the beach and took her spot.
We carried on through the more spectacular section of the Pacific Coast Highway until we reached Monterey.
We had dinner on the waterfront and then the girls had a swim to finish off the day. Sarah-Jean wanted her mother to know that she was doing lengths as promised.
