No News

 The ground was still very soft today, but I wanted to get the grass cut before the next bout of rain.  Got it done.  Left some muddy tracks in places, but they'll disappear in a few days.

Otherwise a quiet day.  Stay well.

Golf, Beer and Wings

 Our first item of note is that today is Steve Lougheed's birthday.  In his honour I'm publishing a couple of terrific cartoons that he sent me.

So, you've heard about Trudeaus surfing trip to Tofino on the day he should have been attending a Truth and Reconciliation Event (an invitation that he didn't even bother responding to until the shit hit the fan).  

But have you heard that just six days after his cabinet was sworn in on November 4, 2015 - the cabinet that included Jody Wilson-Raybould as Justice Minister and Attorney General - that her office, without her knowledge, was told to abandon an appeal to get the Catholic Church to meet at least some of its financial obligation to First Nations people?

I wonder who made that decision?  Slimeball!  (Someday I'll tell you what I really think.)

We had a great day today, starting with a round of golf at Thundering Waters.  Mardi and I were joined by David and Matt.  It's a difficult golf course, yet I like it and usually score fairly well there.

David found the flaw in his swing and had a good score as well.  But at one point, when he offered to retrieve a ball from the water, he stepped in a spot that wasn't as firm as it looked.

A highlight was the fact that two of us (who shall be unnamed, but it was not Matt or Mardi) got birdies and celebrated with birdie juice.

Overall though, Mardi, the tricotuese (you could look it up) was not happy with her results.

After golf, Matt left for a dinner engagement with Maureen, Jim and Monica.  The other three of us used the vouchers for a free beer tasting at Blackburn Brewery, and free wings at Hooter's, that were included in the golf package.  A fine outing.  Great day!

Canadian Beer Day

Two important events today.  The first is a birthday greeting for Gabriela Lougheed, Mardi's niece.

The second is an event that Sven likes.

Actually, I thought that Canadian Beer Days were much like Sven's birthdays - you can celebrate them every day.

Spent time today digging sod, weeding and spreading mulch.  Heavy wet work so I called it a day after just an hour and a half.  It's going to be at least the weekend before the grass will be dry enough to cut.

Otherwise not much news, so here's an item Mardi found.  Lots of truth in this one!

Today we booked a couple of November shows that the Lighthouse Theatre is putting on.  They'll be held in the theatre itself, but seats will be well spaced, as they were in the summer tent.  And vaccine proof and masks are mandatory.

One of the shows is a Norm Foster.  He's an awesome playwright!

Soggy Day

 A brave (crazy might be a better descriptive) foursome headed out to MontHill this morning.  To say it was soggy would be an understatement.

In fact, the greens were so wet that the worms had drilled exit holes to escape drowning.

Power carts were not allowed, and all of their pull carts were out on the course.  So Gary and David carried their bags, Calvin used his own cart and, as advertised, I carried four clubs and five balls (I didn't lose any, and found four or five that other people had lost - ended up with a pocket full).  Didn't keep score - turns out that's less traumatic.

We were told to play the Blue course twice, as the other two were more flooded.  Turned out that once around was more than enough.  But we had a good time.  I won a Dog Meat on #3, and we celebrated Calvin's birdie on #6 with some peach "juice".  And then, after the round, the usual celebratory drinks along with fries.

Next week's weather looks more promising so we'll keep on trying.

Rainy Day

First item of business is a shout-out to my golfing buddies, Ron King and Al Addis, who are celebrating another birthday (boy, they've had almost as many as me!).  Best wishes guys!

We had a bit of damp air as I left home this morning, but I assumed that I would be able to cut grass.  Apparently not.......

They had a deluge, and it was still raining.  I don't have to water the baskets today!  

By the end of the day, David will have to swim to his truck.

So I headed home.  And once again, just damp air here.  Strange!

No work and no Blue Jays game, so I finished reading the Jody Wilson-Raybould book "Indian In The Cabinet: Speaking Truth To Power".  Heavy reading, but well worth the effort.  

It captures the (lack of) character of the fake who occupies our Prime Minister's office (when he's not avoiding the Truth and Reconciliation Day by surfing outside an $18 million dollar mansion in Tofino).  

I really admire that lady!

Tomorrow may be interesting at the golf course.  If they don't allow power carts I won't be pulling a cart - too much work on wet ground for an old guy.  So I'll be walking with four clubs and a few balls.  We'll see how that goes.

End of Season

 Rain early in the day and a Blue Jays game at 3 p.m.  So I didn't get to the greenhouse today.

Blue Jays won yesterday 10-1 and today 12-4, but they needed the Boston Red Sox or the Yankees to lose and it didn't happen.  So their season is over.

Incredible what these (mostly) kids accomplished while playing out of Dunedin (where the other teams, especially the Rays are essentially the home team) and Buffalo (where the Yankees, in particular, are the home team) and finally Toronto.  Moved their families twice during the season and still won 91 games.  Records galore set.  Probably in line for MVP (Guerrero) and Cy Young (Robbie Ray).

Should be a great season next year!

Day Two - Forest Golf

 Yesterday, we played the 18 hole course again.  Ron King will appreciate that for the first three holes I had one putt pars.  Unfortunately, it was back to normal after that.

On the island hole that I had navigated so well yesterday, my long drive today put me in a position where a shot to the green was blocked.  

 If I tried to go under the tree and hit the green I would end up either in the water or rolling through the green into water on the other side.  So, I wisely punched the ball a few feet to the right to give me a clear path to the green..............and then I put it in the water anyway.

We finished the round (I took Mardi's pretend money) and loaded the clubs in the car. 

We didn't play the nine hole course, but it looked to be in the same good condition as the eighteen.  As I recall, it is similar to the bigger course, has two holes where you have to cross the creek, but is only 1,886 yards and would take about an hour and a half.  Next time.

For the folks who used to golf in Forest, you'll be glad to know that Andrew, the former pro, is back . He left when the course changed ownership and the new owners, who were hotel people and didn't care about the course, let the course and the dining room deteriorate.  Now, he's General Manager of Forest and its sister course in Grand Bend and things are back to near normal.

We'll definitely be returning.

After packing the clubs in the car we headed south to Wallaceburg to see our friends Eric and Jon.  They moved from Vancouver and bought this house just before the pandemic and Eric has renovated most of the interior.  They've also had the back yard transformed from a wasteland to this.

Inside and out, the work is HGTV quality.

After enjoying a wonderful strip loin barbeque we said our goodbyes and started the two and half hour drive home.  Arrived in our parking lot at 9:46 and I was in bed before 10.  Thus no blog last night.

Missed the Blue Jays game that they won handily.  We have our fingers crossed for today's last game of the season.  They have to win, and at least one other team has to lose, for them to get into a playoff.
