November 10 - 11. Lest We Forget

We left Rock Hill at 7:20 a.m.  and arrived home at 7:30 p.m.

The day began sunny and cool with high winds.  Most of the trees had lost their leaves, save the oaks which hold on the longest.

In Virginia we passed the Shot Tower State Park, site of the Jacksonville Ferry Shot Tower which was completed in 1807.
The tower is built on a hillside, stands 75 feet high and has a shaft
that goes another 75 feet down the side of the hill.  Lead was melted at the top and then dropped through sieves to water at the bottom.  The height was critical - in that distance the lead became spherical, but much longer and it would have been deformed when it hit the water.

Visiting the tower has been on my bucket list for a few years, but we never seem to have the time on our way south or north.  One of these times I'll make it happen.

The trip was uneventful until we reached northern Pennsylvania, where we hit lake effect snow.  It was slow going until just after the New York border when things cleared.

The reason we had decided to get home by Saturday night was because Mardi had been asked to lay a wreath on Remembrance Day at the Stoney Creek Monument for her church.

An honour she welcomed!

Tomorrow we catch up on a few things and then get packed to leave Tuesday morning for our week in Branson, Missouri.
