Hallowe'en

 Two special occasions to celebrate today.  First up, Rhiannon's son Lincoln is now nine.  Congratulations young man!

And today is a very special day for Mardi and me.  It was eighteen years ago that I took her golfing and she invited me for dinner - our first date.  Before dinner was over the gremlins were knocking on the door, so I helped her hand out Hallowe'en treats before heading home in a daze.  Happy daze were here to stay.

Mardi's church had asked the congregants to come dressed for Hallowe'en today.  So our construction boss is ready to go (my boss for sure, especially when she warns me to "Be very careful" with the hammer in her belt!)

Costco Converts

Headed to the greenhouse, but didn't work - they had another deluge last night.  I think that it's time to start work building the Ark! 

The forecast calls for two or three rain free days, so hopefully I'll be able to complete another garden and get the grass cut soon.

A couple of days ago, Mardi received her new hearing aids.  She got them from Costco and they cost less than one fifth the quote that she had from a popular hearing aid provider.  That's two tense!

And the technician she dealt with was much more informative than the person she had talked to previously.

Speaking of  Costco, we got quotes on our travel insurance as well.  Their prices are less than a third of what we were quoted by our usual source.  Don't know how they do it, but I've become a convert.  Capital One, you're first in our minds.

A Canadian golf rookie, Taylor Pendrith, is leading the Bermuda golf tournament by three strokes after three rounds.  I've never heard his name before!  Hopefully, he will prevail in the final round tomorrow.

Kathryn joined us for dinner tonight, after which she finished a lap afghan she was crocheting.  It will be donated to a local nursing home.  Meanwhile Mardi was making pom poms for the toques she has made for the human trafficking victims.  I was the cheerleader.  Good work ladies!

Company At Last

 Tonight we entertained Maureen and Matt for cards and dinner, our first opportunity to enjoy friends at our house in 23 months.  They arrived at 5:30 and we played cards for an hour before dinner.  That was the best time of the day, hands down.

Then back to cards before we enjoyed pumpkin pie for dessert.

Maureen has had cataracts removed from both eyes and she was right on her game.  Unfortunately, she had me for a partner.

Mardi has also had one of her senses improved, but I'll hold that story back until tomorrow.

Word Games

 Runoff from the escarpment continues to flow.  Saw a twig drift by.  

Of course, I knew it wood float.

Moved four wagon loads of sod.  Got pretty muddy in the process.

We have a misbehaving "Christmas" Cactus.  Last year it didn't bloom at all - probably in protest against the coronavirus.  But this year it is back to its normal Hallowe'en show.

A beautiful display, even though the timing is confusing.

I hope the rest of you have patience while I play my word games.  Now that I've started burying them in the regular "news", poor Gary and Al have to parse every word to make sure they don't miss the point, which is on their heads of course.

Farming

I edged about 100 feet of gardens today.  Too wet to do anything else.  I tried to make one of the gardens into a circle, but it was pointless. 

While I was at the greenhouse I decided to take a walk back to see the stranded tractor.  Conditions were challenging.

But I made it back to the area of the "incident".

Four wheel drive doesn't help when you're stuck in grease!  This will take a few days.

Farming isn't for the faint of heart, and when I see the challenges and, sometimes disasters, I am amazed at David's ability to shake it off and move on - and pretty damn proud as well!  A true Optimist - "Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind".

I sure as hell couldn't cope with it!

But at least seeing the fall colours made the trip back worthwhile.

On the brighter side Sue, our retired school teacher, is getting into her Mazda for it's last ride.  A new Honda CRV is in her future.  Well done!

Weather Woes

 

It's going to be a few days before I can cut grass or garden again.

With my purpose in life suspended I guess that I'll have to come up with something else to keep busy.
